September Golf Calendar – and the Shore Course Closes

For those of you that might have missed the notice: it is with heavy heart that we are closing the Shore Course of Holly Kai Golf Club. The notice went out on Sunday that: “On Thursday we predict a major flood will hit the Shore Course flooding it. Since FEMA will be in charge of the clean up, we dont expect much. So we are announcing the total shut down of the Shore Course. Happiliy the original golf course in SL, the Ocean Course will be unaffected by this. Wednesday of this week will be the final day you can play the Shore Course.”

I am working on the scoring for this past month and will post that later tonight, but I wanted to get the September Golf Calendar published as early as possible. I want to congratulate JuanCruz and seaone for winning the tournament with scores of 34. WTG guys! Below is the calendar:

In case you might have missed this, I wanted to show this to you.

“The British Open was a riot, wasn’t it? You can’t beat watching some of the world’s finest finding their balls buried in shrubbery much like yours typically are.

There was more brilliance on display than blunders, the highlight of which being a sensational 17th-hole chip onto the green from Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, on Saturday.

Stymied up against a stone wall, he turned his back to the hole and hit his ball directly into the stone, which it bounced off, then looped high in the air and came down behind him — directly onto the green. Despite a disappointing double-bogey, he was heartily cheered by the gallery behind the green as he walked to the 18th tee. He birdied the last hole to finish the day 3-under-par.

Miguel’s 17th-hole heroics couldn’t prevent him from finishing way down the pecking order, however, tied for 27th at 2-under. It was South African Louis Oosthuizen who took home the Claret Jug thanks to a storming 16-under-par 272 over the weekend at the storied St. Andrews course in Scotland.”

July Tournament Report and Points Standings

We had seven golfers (all A Flight) play in the July tournament and ALL of them scored under par. Way to go! JuanCruz Zarco came in first with a score of 29, followed by Getme Somme with a score of 30. Three golfers had a four under par round of 32 (Aeries Takaaki, Pussy Fanshaw, and Dillon Speculaas). By the way, speaking of long-time golfers Getme and Dillon, we wish to congratulate them on the fourth anniversary of their sim, Provincetown. Read all about it HERE.

A lot to report on today! The results of the Big Ben Putting Tournament are presented below. As you can see we had a NUMBER of new players come and join us. Not only did they play in this tournament, but they have gone on to play full rounds and mini-tournaments. I will be distributing trophies to the first, second, and third place players in the next few days. Look for it in the “mail”.

Traffic at Holly Kai Golf Club is up a LOT. We are getting 40 to 50 unique visitors to the club per day. We have also seen an up-tick in new players buying golf vouchers. I would encourage all of you to welcome these new players or visitors to the area when you see them. I know that some of our long time players are doing a terrific job of helping new players by playing rounds with them and by showing them the ropes. We want to thank you for doing this!

Results of the Holly Kai Points Competition is posted below. We have a number of new players not only playing golf but also posting their scores. We also have three new A Flight golfers from this group. Join me in welcoming the following NEW A Flight golfers: Ruff Redgrave, Dusty Merlin, and Ajvarman Grigorovich. Holly Kai Points

Next Saturday is the Monthly Golf Tournament. It will be held on the SHORE course, and the normal tee-off time will be 8 am. You will earn 25 points toward the Holly Kai Points Competition if you play with one witness NOT at 8 am start time. You earn 30 points if you play either with two OR at the 8 am start time. Your witnesses must play and post if they are not a designated Course Marshall. Your tournament play must be completed by midnight SLT on Saturday.

We will also have another Putting Tournament on Saturday morning for NOVICES ONLY. If you have never played in a regular tournament, you are considered a novice. From 9 am to 11 am, play a round on the putting green. There will be a web form there for you to post your scores for the Putting Tournament.

I thought you might like to take a look at this impromptu video that I did of the Tournament on Saturday morning. A lot of new faces. If you happen to see Ruff Redgrave, Ajvarman Grigorovich, Kemmi Avium, or Elise Fugazi on the course… please welcome them. Experienced players seaone Bunyip, Xandra Demonia, and Aeries Takaaki also took part. Trophies and results will be posted soon. There is no sound on the video…so don’t try to adjust it! Enjoy!

HKC Update July 8, 2010

Things are hopping over at Holly Kai Golf Club. We have had more new players play in the past two weeks than in all of the first six months of 2010! Thank you to those members who have been working hard to bring friends over and to promote the club in recent days. Thanks also to Jack Belvedere and GOHA Hockey who have passed the word along to their members about the new life at Holly Kai.

Beginning in a few days you will notice a cool animated ad that will be running on XStreet. We expect that advertising to bring even more potential new players to Holly Kai Golf Club. This would be a good time to hang out at the clubhouse, keep an eye on the map, and just in general help us welcome potential new players.

To celebrate our new traffic we are holding a fun and exciting tournament this Saturday, July 10 8AM to 11AM. In honor of the first ringing of London’s BIG BEN (July 10, 1859) we will hold the Holly Kai BIG BEN Putting Tournament (9 holes). There will be two divisions: Regular Players (those who have played in at least one tournament at Holly Kai) and Novice Players (those who have never played a in a tournament). Come over any time between 8am and 11am to play your round.

Donations are up. If you enjoy Holly Kai Golf Club and all we provide the SL community won’t you please help maintain this unique Second Life environment with your donations. All donations are fully deductible from your Second Life taxes.

It takes $600 USD per month to support those parts of Hollywood, the Channel Islands, and the Holly Kai sims that host golf. We don’t resort to traditional money making devices that so many of us abhor. No ‘ingos, no dance clubs, no sex clubs, no gambling halls, no camping chairs, or large laggy malls. Final Points Results for June

Congratulations to Aeries Takaaki and Xandra Demonia for winning the monthly points competition. They tied for first with total scores of 55. The monthly tournament on Saturday had five people play. Pussy Fanshaw and JuanCruz Zarco tied for 1st place in A-flight. No B-Flight players participated. Thanks to Deej Kashiki for helping as a Course Marshall.

An Important Announcement Regarding the Future of Golf

This is the most important post in Holly Kai Golf Club (HKGC) history.

HKGC began in July 2006 when Philip Linden played in the opening foursome. At the time he said said about golf at Holly Kai Golf Club “so cool I can’t believe it”. Since then thousands of rounds have been played at the most realistic golf course in SL. Now HKGC is facing a big challenge. Up to this point, even with green fees that were as high as 250L a round (in the early days) and 165L (until recently), we never have been able to to avoid losing money each month (not surprising given that HKGC takes up all or part of 10 sims). And now golf at Holly Kai now only costs 50L. The problem is, to realistically simulate 18 holes of golf in SL you cannot do it in one or two sims.

Because of all the negative choices that LL has made about pricing over the past two years we find that the SL economy has been so poor that we can no longer afford to support HKGC golf from profits elsewhere in our other projects.

On June 26th, at the beginning of the June Tournament, MarkTwain White made the following speech:

MarkTwain White: I find it very interesting and satisfying that most of the core players are here this morning, because this is a from the heart speech…

so here we go…

“Welcome to the HKGC June Golf Tournament….Before we do pairings I want to update you…on the status of golf at HKGC. As you know we have a parcel at the SL7 Birthday sim…To my knowledge six of us have gone over to…work the booth: Seaone, Derrick, Pussy, Deej, Nber, and myself. I want to thank those folks and let you know there is..still a day and a half to go over and help out.

We had a dance on the patio last night that Derrick DJed…Juan was the only member to attend outside of Nber and myself…not sure what that means.

I plan to run 250,000 impressions of a banner ad on XStreet SL… I will announce to everone when those ads start running. Iif that does not bring much response in the way of members coming to HKGC to help with folks that respond to the ad, then we will begin an orderly shut down of HKC. So please help out and ask other golfers to help out…lets see if there is any interest to continue this project. We have lowered the price of golf to 50L which should remove price as a barrier to growing HKC…Lets do our best to preserve HKGC.”

In the comments that followed it was pointed out that the Party on the Patio” event was not at a European friendly time…and Mark responded that there are over 600 members in SLGA, and surely not all of them are European time zone.

Mark will be sending Ad Objects to members of the HKGC and SLGA groups to see if they want to rezz the ads in their venues.

So everyone, there it is. If you have enjoyed HKGC golf in the past and want to see it continue, we need you to reconnect to the Club. Come back for some damn cheap golf (50L) at the most realistic golf courses in Second Life. Get some new friends to bring with you. Let’s revive HKGC!
